Pffft, My Life Is Lame…

We all know someone who is in a lousy job or a bad relationship, yet they stay. If they hate it so much, why don’t they move on? That person could be you.

Your thoughts can become so negative that they paralyse you and prevent you from moving on or changing your circumstances, even if you have where you are. Then you lack the energy, courage and vision to change anything about your situation.

In retirement homes, you will find more women than men – why? Because, traditionally, men go to work and live for the day they can stop and retire.

Their whole lives are focused on stopping, and once that future goal or pull is no longer there, they do stop – literally.

Do you lack a future pull? Call the medics! Let’s get wheelchairs, crutches and running shoes to help rid you of paralysing thoughts. What is pulling you towards tomorrow? Re-create an exciting future for yourself. Make a list of things you would still like to do. They can be little things, or they can be bold. Add an achievement date next to each.

Remember, a goal is a dream with a deadline!

“No! No! No! When Negativity Rules…”

Negativity is the sickness of our time. Just think about the last social gathering you were at, what were the topics of discussion? Did you celebrate the natural wonders of our country, the beauty of the landscape and the people? Or did you stand around the barbeque fire, smouldering with negativity? We have become a nation of complainers.

Negative thinking is like a disease – it poisons your whole personality.

  • Watch your thoughts, for they become your words.
  • Watch your words, for they become your actions.
  • Watch your actions, for they become your habits.
  • Watch your habits, for they become your character.
  • Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.

thoughts > words > actions > habits > character > destiny

You’ve heard that “you are what you eat.” Well, you certainly are what you think! What you put into your mind and those of others is what you become.

In becoming more positive, don’t try to “stop negative thoughts.” This practice will work against you since the mind doesn’t compute negatives. To demonstrate this, let’s do a little experiment. Please concentrate and do the following:

Don’t think about ice cream.

How did you do? Admit it – the only thing you could think about was ice cream!

Shift your focus AWAY from what you DON’T want to do, TO what you DO want to do.

Don’t talk about the problem – find the solution!

Feeling A Bit Frayed Around the Edges?

Do you suffer from negative stress?

Although a bit of stress can help you to perform better, you shouldn’t trifle with negative stress. It manifests in your body, and as it builds up in your body, it builds your doctor’s bank balance.

Where do you feel it in the body? Back, neck, colon, heartbeat?

Do you stress whenever life seems less than perfect? The photocopier jams. The bus is late. Your colleague is in a bad mood. Another motorist cuts in front of you.

If any of these is enough to spoil your day, think about it for a minute: Why not see things for what they are – isolated incidents – and move on? In the bigger scheme of your life, how important are they? These are excellent opportunities to practise positive thinking! Is this a significant event? Will it change my future? If not, why waste more energy on it?

Identify your stress triggers and be prepared. When they pop up again, put them in perspective: “This is only a moment in my life. It is not my entire life.”

Choose happiness as a mode of travel and not a destination.
